TWENTY-THREE

Malakai

WHY THE HELL ISN’T anyone answering their goddamn phone? I thought, pulling into a motel just off the interstate. I’d been driving for hours and needed a break. Plus, Luna’s sedative would be wearing off soon. I needed to get her inside and detained before that happened.

Hours had passed without an update from the crew. The last text I received was from Derek telling me that my plan had worked and they were able to breach the Sinclair house. It’d been nothing but radio silence since.

Did something go wrong?

Fishing out my phone, I tried my dad again, but the call went straight to voicemail. Dammit.

Choosing a parking spot closest to the ground level rooms of the motel, I hopped out and popped the trunk, checking to make sure my hostage was still down for the count. I looked around before lifting the top. The area was dark and remote, too early in the morning for people to be roaming about.

Better for me.

I peeked inside to find Luna in the same position I left her, on her side with her hands bound behind her back and her legs curled up in the fetal position. Given how long she’d been like this, she had probably lost circulation in her limbs hours ago.

I tried not to feel bad about that, pushing the guilt down as far as it could go. Pressing two fingers to her neck, I quickly checked her pulse. Strong and steady.

Good.

Closing her in again, I headed towards the motel lobby, taking count of the security cameras along the way. Only two were mounted near the front entrance, with another set located on the upper level.

Areas to avoid.

The guy at the front desk didn’t give me any trouble, so focused on his word jumble he couldn’t be bothered with me.

“Room for two,” I said.

“One bed or two?” he muttered without looking up from his puzzle, his tone indicating just how much he hated his life.

“Two. Something on the lower floor. Near the back, preferably.”

“How many nights?”

I wasn’t sure. However long it took the others to get the job done. “Two, for now.”

He rang me up and reached under his desk for the keys. “Room 108, straight down on the left.”

Taking what was offered, I sauntered back to the car and moved it closer to the room that was thankfully situated near the back of the building with no cameras in sight. I spent some time getting everything set up, grabbing my supplies from the backseat. The bed furthest from the door would be Luna’s. Pulling the red spray-paint from my duffle, I got to work drawing sigils on every door and window that could be used as an escape route. The symbols were most effective against demons but, if altered correctly, could also be used against witches, preventing them from entering or escaping any space as long as the sigil remained intact.

Once finished, I gathered Luna from the trunk, gritting my teeth against the feel of her in my arms, the way her skin heated mine with just a simple graze.
